Keynote: What Makes Intelligent Visual Analytics Tools Really Intelligent?
Abstract Visual analysis helps people see and understand data. Effective visualizations depend on the task at hand and need to be simple, yet meaningful. While data-driven inquiry has become the norm of business practices and decision making, there is a huge untapped market of "data enthusiasts" who aren't experts; yet they are great analytical thinkers and need tools to support their questions. Natural language processing has garnered interest in helping people interact with computers to make sense and meaning of the world.
In this keynote, I will discuss how natural language can be leveraged in various aspects of the analytical workflow ranging from smarter data transformations, visual encodings, autocompletion to supporting analytical intent, to conversational interfaces. With a better understanding of how users explore data in their flow of analysis, can people doing analysis be supported by more intelligent tools? In this keynote, we will explore this question.
Biography
Vidya is the director of Tableau Research. She leads an interdisciplinary team of research scientists in areas including data visualization, multimodal interaction, statistics, applied ML, and NLP. She earned her doctorate in Computer Graphics in 2005 at Northwestern University. Prior to joining Tableau, she worked as a principal research scientist at the Nokia Research Center for 7 years. Her personal research interests lie at the intersection of natural language processing and computer graphics. She combines concepts and methods from information retrieval, human perception, and cognitive science to help users effectively interact with devices and information in their environment. A significant portion of her work covers the investigation, prototyping, and evaluation of such novel concepts.
