Toward an Inclusive Artificial Intelligence: The Ms. Q&A With Gabriela de Queiroz
When presented with two sets of questions, one generated by ChatGPT—a new form of artificial intelligence that generates human-like conversational text—and the other by a team of writers, data scientist and Women in Data Science Conference speaker Gabriela de Queiroz quickly identified the correct authors of each. Asked how she had so swiftly distinguished between the AI-generated text and the human text, de Queiroz observed that the ChatGPT text was generic and formulaic, while the text produced by human hands was more creative and individualistic.

Embracing Equity: Dataiku + Women in Data Science
As stated by the 2023 International Women’s Day campaign, “Equity isn't just a nice-to-have, it's a must-have.” Equity recognizes that each person has different circumstances and allocates the exact resources and opportunities needed to reach an equal outcome. A focus on gender equity needs to be part of every society's DNA. This begs the question: How can each one of us actively support and embrace equity within our own sphere of influence?

How AI can help predict weather in the era of climate change
From floods in California to freezing temperatures in Texas, 2023 has already seen its share of unusual weather. As climate change intensifies, extreme weather events like heat waves, hurricanes, and droughts will continue to become more common. As weather conditions change, it’s essential to know what’s coming. We need accurate weather forecasts on many different time scales in order to prepare for climate-related disasters, manage the power supply, plan agriculture, keep transportation running smoothly, and much more. However, we find ourselves in a catch-22, because as weather conditions change and intensify, they become even harder to forecast.

What Makes Intelligent Visual Analytics Tools Truly Intelligent?
Humans are innately curious creatures. We constantly seek connection, certainty, and clarification in the world around us — when looking at signs while driving, for instance, or attempting to understand pointed gestures when asking for directions. And beyond pattern recognition, we seek to find meaning in our surroundings. Vidya Setlur presented this research during a keynote lecture at the Women in Data Science (WiDS) Worldwide Conference 2022, which took place earlier this year.

A new generation of data scientists could be our best weapon against climate change
Data science is emerging as a powerful weapon in the fight against climate change. For example, an international team of researchers recently identified the top sites in the world releasing methane. They used machine learning algorithms to analyze thousands of satellite images and pinpoint “ultra-emitter” sites responsible for about 10% of the oil and gas industry’s global methane emissions. Many are pipeline leaks that are impossible to detect from the ground, but relatively simple and cost-effective to fix once they have been found.

Using Data Science to Make Clean Energy More Equitable
Data science plays an increasing role in the fight against climate change. It can be used to help with everything from predicting supply and demand for clean energy systems to identifying which buildings to target for energy efficiency upgrades. As we use data science to develop innovative solutions to climate change, we should be careful not to replicate, or worsen, existing inequities - or create new ones. The impacts of climate change, from extreme weather to debilitating drought, will hit harder in poor countries and communities least equipped to deal with the consequences. Unfortunately, many of the solutions we are developing are also inequitable. Poor households that still cook with coal and kerosene can’t afford solar roofs and energy-efficient appliances. Low-income parents juggling work and childcare have little time to spend at charging stations to charge electric vehicles and may not have a garage or driveway to charge them at home.

The Human Side of Data Science Can No Longer Be an Afterthought, with Cecilia Aragon
Data science increasingly shapes our world, from the news we read to who is selected for a job interview to how long someone is sentenced to prison. As the amount of data we collect and analyze grows exponentially, we are beginning to see concerning consequences: algorithms that reinforce social biases, threats to our privacy, the spread of fake news and even the weaponization of disinformation for use in cyberwarfare. Our approach to data science so far has treated social and ethical concerns as an afterthought. The "move fast and break things" mindset encourages people to tackle technical challenges first and then focus on the human impact and unintended consequences later (if at all).

Women Data Scientists of the World, Unite!
The Women in Data Science Conference (WiDS) was born of a problem: How can we remove the barriers to success that traditionally bar women from accessing the increasingly critical field of data science? WiDS co-founder Professor Margot Gerritsen is no stranger to this problem. Gerritsen, who received her Ph.D. in scientific computing and computational mathematics at Stanford University, recalls that as a woman and an international student pursuing a degree in computational science nearly three decades ago, there were few people she felt closely connected to—and fewer still who understood the challenges she faced in scientific fields. “You can’t be what you can’t see” wasn’t yet a slogan, but Gerritsen knew she wanted to help break down the barriers she had faced in the field so that other women would not have to overcome the same obstacles.

Why the World Needs More Women Data Scientists
Relying on biased information undermines the effectiveness of evidence-based policymaking. A potential source of bias in many datasets is that most of the world’s data scientists—i.e., the people who collect, organize, analyze data, and make decisions—are men. Women hold just 18 percent of data science jobs in the United States, and the problem is worse in most lower-income countries, where women are less likely to have access to the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education that provides a gateway to a career in data science.

Since the founding of the Nobel Prize in 1901, only 18 women have been awarded for their contribution to the world of science. For Ana Luna, Professor at the Faculty of Engineering of the Universidad del Pacífico, this figure shows a huge gap: it is difficult for a scientist to achieve recognition for her discoveries.

The Data Science Infographic: Is “Being a Man” a Qualification?
What is the Data Science Infographic? Ask any data scientist if they’ve seen a “What it takes to be a data scientist” infographic, and they’ll answer in the affirmative (and probably tell you about their side project of collecting and classifying them with a neural net). Because the title data scientist has yet to settle on a universal definition, folks are continuously dreaming up snappy ways to communicate the skills of our trade (I’m just thankful we’ve expanded past the Venn diagrams). The recipe is simple: a drawing of a geek in glasses and a (sometimes comically elaborate) list of skills.
