Excellence in Research Award

Picture
In the Excellence in Research Award (Phase II), we broaden our focus to examine the impacts of climate change across multiple domains. Participants in Phase II had the opportunity to choose to explore one dataset among several, spanning sectors including healthcare, energy and environmental protection. Participants also had opportunities to take deeper dives into their dataset and tackle a range of impactful real-world tasks. Teams submitted a research report at the end of Phase II.

New this year, participants in Phase II received mentorship from experts in the domain related to their choice of dataset and task. Domain expert mentorship in Phase II allowed participants to both strengthen their foundational data science skills as well as develop skills needed to conduct research in data science. Teams with outstanding paper submissions from Phase II will be invited to submit their work for publication.
To be eligible for the award, all entrants must have participated in the first phase of the WiDS Datathon 2022 on Kaggle.

Submissions have been reviewed for their potential for real-world impact, rigor in scientific methodology, and clarity of communication, by subject matter experts from the WiDS Datathon Committee, the National Science Foundation Big Data Innovation Hubs, and Datathon partners.

Partners and Tracks

Phase II participants were able to choose one of three datasets to explore:
  1. US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA): weather, air pollutant, and census data
  2. MIT Critical Data: CDC county level COVID data
  3. Climate Change AI: OpenStreetMap building data

Timeline

  • March 8th: Phase II registration opens
  • March 18: Phase II Q&A kick-off call
  • April 15th: Phase II registration closes & Mentorship office hours
  • May 13th: Mentorship office hours
  • June 17th: Mentorship office hours
  • June 30th: Submission papers due on Submittable. Judging begins
  • August: Winners announced

WiDS Datathon Partners EPA, MIT Critical Data, and CCAI will also host office hours for teams in their respective tracks to answer questions. See Kaggle for a full listing of office hours and to sign up.

Prizes

The top three teams will receive cash prizes, courtesy of Kaggle.

1st Place in the Excellence in Research Award:
  • $4,000 USD cash prize for the team
  • 1 complimentary VIP registration per team member for the WiDS Worldwide Conference in 2023
  • A WiDS Datathon Excellence in Research Award Certificate for each team member
2nd Place in the Excellence in Research Award:
  • $3,000 cash prize for the team
  • 1 complimentary VIP registration per team member for the WiDS Worldwide Conference in 2023
  • A WiDS Datathon Excellence in Research Award Certificate for each team member
3rd Place in the Excellence in Research Award:
  • $2,000 cash prize for the team
  • 1 complimentary VIP registration per team member for the WiDS Worldwide Conference in 2023
  • A WiDS Datathon Excellence in Research Award Certificate for each team member

In addition to the Excellence in Research Award, up to $7,000 USD will be distributed for honorable mentions across submitted research papers. Outstanding honorable mentions may also be invited to submit their work for publication. All winners will be recognized on WiDS social media channels, and winning papers will be posted on the WiDS website.

Eligibility
To be eligible for the award, all entrants must have participated in the first phase of the WiDS Datathon 2022 on Kaggle.

We encourage Phase II individuals and author teams of up to 8 people to work together. You may collaborate with individuals in a “new” team for the second phase of the Datathon, as long as (1) each person participated in the first phase of the datathon on Kaggle and (2) your new team still includes 50% or more individuals identifying as women.

Submission Formatting
Submissions should follow the WiDS Excellence in Research Award Paper Formatting Guidelines.

Submissions should include details on data exploration/analysis and model building/interpretation, as well as an abstract (4-5 sentence summary) and a list of references (e.g., cited research papers, books, tutorials, or other resources used). Final papers should be submitted as a .pdf file; participants are welcome to generate the .pdf file using Word or LaTex.

We request submission content in English to facilitate the review process, but welcome additional translations and encourage participants to share their papers broadly. Papers will also be eligible to be published on the WiDS Datathon website.
See more submission content and guidelines.
