WiDS Barcelona WiDS Barcelona was a hybrid event held on June 22, with speakers meeting face-to-face at the Barcelona School of Infomatics (FIB – UPC) while the session was broadcasted on YouTube Live with more than hundreds of participants from 12 countries. Twenty prestigious speakers provided insight about data science research and enterprise initiatives in Barcelona. WiDS Barcelona was hosted by ambassadors Karina Gibert, Head of Intelligent Data Science and Artificial Intelligence Research Center at UPC and Vice President for Ethics and Equity at COEINF, and Paula Petrone, CEO of Phenobyte Life Science, S. L. and Researcher at ISGlobal. The first keynote was delivered by Carme Artigas, State Secretary for Digital Transformation and Artificial Intelligence of the Spanish Government, who presented the, “National Artificial Intelligence Strategy (ENIA)”, which was also broadcasted on the Fibracat.tv channel. In the afternoon, Virginia Dignum, Professor at UMEA University (Sweden) and Member of the High Level Expert Group of Artificial Intelligence of the European Commission gave a talk on ethical issues in artificial intelligence and its impact in this new digital era. She presented the ethics guidelines for a Trustworthy AI recommended by the EC. In addition to these keynotes, three application case studies were presented, and two round tables were conducted with many experts in their respective fields. Mentoring and networking sessions were also organized where participants were able to share their experiences, learn about career opportunities in different fields, receive advice from the experts and establish cooperation and professional networking connections. WiDS Tokyo @ IBM On June 4, 2021, WiDS ambassadors Kyoko Nishito, Aya Tokura, and Noriko Katoh from IBM Japan, held their second WiDS Tokyo @ IBM. There were two keynotes at the beginning and end of the day's event. The beginning one was by Yokohama City University Associate Professor Yoko Ono on 'Data Science x WiDS - WiDS blaze a new trail in data science for our brighter tomorrow’. The closing keynote was delivered by Ms. Makabi, CEO of Chura DATA, Inc., on 'Current and Future Trends in the Field of Data Science'. Other sessions included two sessions based on the experiences of their daily work by IBM data scientists, two tutorial sessions about quantum computers for future data science by IBM research, and a session about fairness in AI by IBM IT Specialist. During each session, attendees posted many live comments and questions using an online survey tool, as speakers responded. In all, there were 270+ registrants and 100+ people were online at any given time, on average. WiDS DACH @ SAP SAP is hosting six WiDS @ SAP Events, including WiDS DACH at SAP, held on May 7. Katharina Schäfer gave the welcome address, followed by the keynote, “The need for new perspectives in Data Science” by Frauke Kreute from the Ludwig-Maximilian-University in Munich. Additional talks were delivered including“From Social Science to Data Science” with Dr. Polina Mosolova, “Encouragement for the Next Generation” by Lena Stempfle; “Team Resource Management and Leadership Principles from Aviation” with Leila Belaasri; and “Women in Innovation” by Simone Burel. In the panel moderated by Hannah Sperling, Fei Xu- Yu, Susanne Beckers and Sarah Detzler discussed insights and shared experiences in “Data Science in Analytics, Sales & Product Development”. WiDS Buenos Aires WiDS Buenos Aires took place on April 9, with the support of several companies and the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Buenos Aires. Cecilia Galarza, the Director of the Center for Computational Simulation of CONICET and Associate Professor of Facultad de Ingeniería, UBA delivered a presentation about cloud services. The next talk, “From evidence to knowledge” was delivered by Anabel Cisneros, a Telecommunications Engineer from the National University of Río Cuarto, Director of the Argentine Company of Satellite Solutions Sociedad Anónima (ARSAT), member of the Board of Directors of the National Commission for Space Activities (CONAE), President of the Argentine Chapter of the Internet Society (ISOC), and President of the Gender and Youth of COPITEC. WiDS Rochester WiDS Rochester, held in Rochester, Minnesota, USA, was very well received and attended. The event started off with Adelaide Arruda-Olsen from the Mayo Clinic, sharing how she is utilizing machine learning algorithms in the Department of Cardiology. Next, Michal Cohen-Shelly, a data engineer who is also from the Department of Cardiology, shared how she wrangles data to build datasets and machine learning models to have tangible outcomes. At the end, attendees explored machine learning infrastructure with Farhana Bandukwala, a software engineer at Google working closely with Mayo Clinic on how to build a scalable infrastructure for big data and some best practices. WiDS Salvador WiDS Salvador brought together more than 800 participants in a two-day online event on June 16-17.Featuring 10 speakers from different backgrounds, the conference addressed topics such as artificial intelligence (neural networks, time series forecasting, evaluation of deep learning models), career in data science in the current pandemic/post-pandemic context, leadership and innovation in data, in addition to live coding sessions about visualization, recommendation systems, and text mining. This WiDS Salvador second edition showed that the initiative has established itself in the regional scenario as an important forum for data science education and strengthening, with participation and support of some of the region’s leading data science education and innovation institutions. The event was live streamed on the IBM Watson Media channel so you can watch the talks here. WiDS Belo Horizonte WiDS Belo Horizonte was held on June 30, hosted by eight WiDS ambassadors. The event began with a workshop titled, “Hands-on: Use of Data Science to Analyze Employees of a company”, presented by Bárbara Silveira Fraga. The workshop was followed by a panel discussion about the labor market for Women in Da Science. Attendees appreciated hearing about the experiences of women who already work in the field, and having the opportunity to learn and get advice from each of them. WiDS Guanajuato The first WiDS Guanajuato was hosted in 2019 through the Center for Research in Mathematics (CIMAT) and ambassadors Ivete Sanchez Bravo and Leticia Ramirez Ramirez. This year the event was held on June 21 with a series of five lectures detailing the application of models, data analysis, orientation of data science focused on health issues, ecological and environmental data. WiDS Cambridge UK @ Mathworks On July 1, WiDS ambassadors Martina Sciola and Julia Hoerner from MathWorks hosted their first regional WiDS Cambridge UK @MathWorks event aimed at the younger generation interested in a career in data science. The 90-minute event included four invited speakers from Industry (Interfolio and Google) and Academia (University of Cambridge and University of Sheffield), followed by a panel discussion and a networking opportunity with each speaker through breakout rooms. The invited speakers, all with different background (including robotics, economics and marketing, machine learning and microelectronics, geophysics), presented about "A day in the life of a data scientist", showing the multiple aspects and applications of data science and sharing their personal and unique career path and their advice with the attendees. WiDS Santiago @ UC On June 5, WiDS Santiago @ UC took place with 200+ participants, from different parts of the world. First, Constanza Gaínza delivered a talk detailing her route to data science, illustrating some data science applications. Then, Stephanie Orellana delivered a workshop about how to work with Spatial Data using R. Dulce Ponceleon delivered the closing keynote address, “Navigating the Hype Surrounding Blockchain”. WiDS Recife WiDS Recife was hosted on a Saturday with more than 300 people attending and watching in the first 24 hours. In the morning, the WiDS Recife ambassadors hosted a workshop about how to interpret geographic data using two pandas libraries: GeoPandas and Folium. In the afternoon there were five lectures, with content for both beginners and experts. Speakers talked about their journeys, how it is to work in the data science field, lectures about open data and even works about exploring exoplanets data. WiDS Barcelona and Madrid WiDS Barcelona & Madrid was held on consecutive days, June 16 in Barcelona and June 17 in Madrid, with a total of 150 people attending in-person and an additional 700+ following the livestream. In Barcelona, the event started with a keynote address, followed by a series of technical talks on Big Data and Machine Learning, Insurance, Technology Consulting, Health & Research, Blockchain, and Mobility. The event in Madrid also began with a keynote address, and was followed by a series of talks on Banking, Telcos, and UX. Each event ended with panel discussions, on Talent & Data in Barcelona and Data Ethics in Madrid.
